G'day from Barbara the Librarian

Hello everyone in Conway. It's been good fun reading your posts. I wish it was summer here! Although it dosn't snow in Melbourne, it still gets cold and icy in the mornings. I see you are curious about what we eat ..... all the usual junk food! Macdonalds, pizza, kebabs and fish and chips. Australians love to BBQ and have roast dinners. Melbourne is a very multicultural city, so we have lots of food from other cultures that we eat in restaurants or cook at home; Vietnamese, Italian, Turkish, Middle Eastern and African to name a few. I've just finished reading the graphic novel version of The Great Gatsby, by Melbourne author Nicki Greenberg. I've also been reading the picture books for older readers that have been short listed for The Australian Book Council Awards; Dust by Colin Thompson, The Island by Armin Greder and Ziba came on a Boat by Robert Ingpen. Are you all looking forward to the Olympics? Cheers, Barbara

***Hi again, this is a post that was originally a comment from a young man in our reading group. Tim is quite a reader and quite a character too. Please do tell us more about what some of your favorite foods are and foods that might be more traditional to Australia! Thanks, Janis/NH

Hello from Conway, NH

Hi Barbara, Aberdeen, Emily and Fatima!
Its great to hear from all of you and learn a bit about your world "down under". The kids in our group who will be blogging are all busy with summer vacation here. Some are going to visit family, some are doing summer camps, and some are just busy! We meet every Thursday over the summer at the library so I will remind them about the blog IF I see any of them this week!

Your questions are great and I have a few for you as well! When you all talk about football, could you tell us what you mean? I am a huge American Football fan but know that you are not talking American football. Please let us all know a bit about your football! Your link is most helpful but I think it would be nice to have a brief description posted! American football is played with an oval ball (nicknamed a pigskin) and there are two teams with the quarterback orchestrating the plays to the other players.
Points are mainly scored with touchdowns ( 6 points)
and the filed goal (1 point) after the touch down.
I am a huge Patriots fan and this is our qb going for a win
during a huge game a few years back. His name is Tom Brady. Football starts here in late August and ends (sadly!) in February.

Also, we live in the mountains in a rural area that people love to visit. There is a huge shopping area as I guess some Americans like to shop on vacation (Not me!) but where we are its over an hour drive to any shopping center. Melbourne is a large city...please tell us a bit about what life is like for you!

And my last question for today, what is everyone reading right now? I have a great list of the books that we have read so far in book club and will post that soon. We are finishing up reading "The Seeing Stone" by Kevin Crossley-Holland. Its a fantasy that has a bit of historical fiction as its about Arthur who pulls the sword from the stone to become king. Its been a fun book and part of a series.

To answer Aberdeen's question about sports, I love to swim and being that it is summer time that means I get to swim quite a bit. I love to go to the ocean but the water is too cold to swim for any length of time (50+ degrees...brrr) so I am in and out. However, in the mountains where we live there are many great lakes and rivers to swim in. I can swim for a long time in the lakes as they are so much warmer!

I will send some pictures of where we live when I get time...its very beautiful here in the White Mountains! Take care, Janis/NH

Hello from Aberdeen

Hello to everyone in Conway! My name is Aberdeen and I am 11 years old. I am in grade 5 at a school in Coburg West. I have a sister called Emily. Some of my favourite authors are J.K Rowling, Enid Blyton, and Georgia Byng. I play netball for North Melbourne and Basketball for the school team. I am also going to play Australian Rules Football at school. I have a dog called Cosmo. He’s a Golden Retriever. I am really interested in playing sport; especially netball. In Melbourne, the weather is quite different to in America. We are in the middle of Winter at the moment. I go to the library nearly every week. I love the library because it has so many books and you can find out about just about anything. What sports do you play in Conway?

G'day from Australia

G'day from Australia to everyone at Conway Public Library.

I'm Barbara the children and youth services librarian, and I work at the Coburg Library, the largest of the five branches at Moreland City Libraries. We are in the middle of winter here in Melbourne and also in the middle of the 2 week school holidays / semester break. We run a program of activities at the library during this time, and yesterday we had over 100 children in to see Mike Jackson, a well known children's performer.

Currently I am reading 'Black Water by David Metzenthen' and 'The Shaggy Gully Times' by Jackie French. Both these books have been shortlisted by the Children's Book Council of Australia for Book for the Year. Black Water is set in Australia during the First World War and is a bit dark. Shaggy Gully is a hilarious newspaper presented in a picturebook format. Here is a joke from it; 'How many koalas does it take to change a light bulb? Hey, how many light bulbs have YOU seen in a gum tree?'. Hope to hear from you soon!, Barbara
